In between, there is plenty of food, music, dancing, sporting events and other contests - combined with a large parade on Saturday morning. But what does the Official Popeye Fanclub have to offer during these festivities?
Club activities start Friday morning with an auction - with all proceeds benefiting the club. Naturally, all items on the auction block are 'Popeye' related. Later Friday, we feature evening number one of our 'Fleischer Film Festival' - where fans can watch 'Popeye' classics 'under the stars' in Chester Square - also known as the Gazebo Park.
On Saturday evening, club members and their friends and families are invited to the Moose Club (RSVP) for our annual banquet. We always have scads of door prizes to give away, and the food is excellent. The big highlight of the evening begins at 8pm(CST) when we go "on the air" with an original radio show - featuring our own troupe of 'Popeye Players'. Each year a new ONE HOUR script is written and is broadcast "live" over our local AM and FM radio stations.
Later, our guests are invited back to Chester Square for night number two of our 'Fleischer Film Festival'. The auction also concludes later on Saturday night.
Sunday morning, we meet at Reids' Harvest House for our annual breakfast served smorgasbord style. This allows folks some time to sit back, relax and mingle a little. After breakfast, we head to Segar Memorial Park for the traditional photo with the Popeye statue. This picture (below) graces the cover of our annual 'Picnic Issue' of the club newsmagazine.
